How do I begin to redecorate a big family room?
Where do I start ?
It is big and is really like two rooms side by side. The one side has a red brick fireplace and 2 navy leather chairs, an end table ,and a lamp. To the left of that is the large addition, the whole thing is painted a light beige. The addition has a navy leather sofa to sit on to watch a TV that is flanked by 2 30 year old wooden blonde cabinets, some lamps and a few more tables. It also has a piano and a wall of windows with just off white vinyl blinds, it also has beige wall to wall carpeting. Any help or ideas would be great.
With such a large room, you may want to break it up into somewhat separate functional areas, say one for visiting using the fireplace as the focal point, and the other for watching television. Its hard to tell without a picture, but it sounds like you already have the concept by describing the area as "like two rooms side by side."
Even though you already have carpeting, you can use area rugs on top of that to define the separate areas. You don't say you're looking for new furniture, but getting rid of some old pieces and adding a couple of new pieces might help.
Are you really happy with the blonde cabinets? You might try painting or re-staining them to update them a little bit. I would definitely get rid of the vinyl blinds. The best place I've found for new window coverings is Blinds Galore (blindsgalore.com).
Try a bit of color on the walls. Don't be afraid, its only paint, and relatively cheap.
If it were me, I'd get rid of the navy leather furniture and get a couple of chairs that swivel, maybe upholstered in some bright color or print, and a complementing love seat for in front of the fireplace. Then put a sofa table, sometimes also called a parson's table, behind the love seat and buy a u-shaped or semi-circular sectional for in front of the t.v.
Again, without a picture or budget, its hard to say.

The Beauty Of Antique Lamps
